Walmart recalls Refresco apple juice sold in 25 states over elevated arsenic levels.

Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold across the U.S. due to potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) elevated the recall's urgency on Friday, following its initial announcement on August 15. The updated classification indicates that while the affected product may temporarily cause adverse health effects, it is unlikely to lead to serious or irreversible medical issues.

The recall affects 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice distributed in 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Florida-based Refresco Beverages US, the manufacturer, voluntarily recalled the contaminated six-packs of 8-ounce juice bottles after detecting levels of inorganic arsenic that exceeded industry standards.

A spokesperson for Refresco has not yet responded to requests for comment.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” said Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman. “We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

The National Institutes of Health notes that very low levels of inorganic and organic arsenic are commonly found in many food products. While slightly elevated levels can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramping, inorganic arsenic is more toxic and its health effects are more severe. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen.

The FDA has stated that the levels found in the recalled apple juice bottles are not expected to cause severe health consequences, and no reports of illness linked to the recall have been shared by the FDA.
